BCBA Salary 2026: What 595 ABA Employers Actually Post

The typical BCBA salary in 2026 is about $90,000 a year. That is the median posted salary across 595 US employers whose BCBA job ads we analyzed on October 1, 2026, and it sits close to Indeed's $91,998 average for board certified behavior analysts. The more useful finding is how tightly pay clusters: two out of three employers post a midpoint between $80,000 and $100,000, and fast-growing demand for BCBAs barely moves the posted number from state to state. This guide breaks down what employers actually advertise, what changes the number, and how to use it when you compare offers.

BCBA salary in 2026: the short answer

Most published BCBA salary figures come from salary aggregators that blend job ads, user reports and estimates. We wanted the number employers commit to in writing, so we collected BCBA job ads from LinkedIn and SimplyHired on October 1, 2026, removed duplicates and ads older than a year, and kept every ad that listed a usable pay range. That left 1,234 salaried ads from 595 employers and 637 hourly ads from 355 employers. To keep a handful of large chains from dominating, each employer counts once, at the median midpoint of its ads.

An outside benchmark lands in the same place. Indeed's career page reports a $91,998 average base salary for board certified behavior analysts, built from about 63,500 salaries in its job postings over 36 months (updated October 4, 2026).

How BCBA pay is distributed

The behavior analyst salary market is narrow. Of the 595 employers posting a salary, 385 (65%) put their midpoint between $80,000 and $100,000. Only 33 (6%) posted a midpoint of $110,000 or more, and only 12 (2%) posted below $70,000.

Two out of three employers post a BCBA salary midpoint between $80,000 and $100,000.

That tight band has a practical meaning. An offer under $80,000 for a full-time clinical BCBA role is below what about 86% of employers advertise, so it deserves a hard question. An offer above $105,000 is in the top tenth of employers. If you get one, check the caseload and any billable-hour target that comes with it.

Senior titles barely move the posted number

About 92% of salaried ads use a title with no seniority keyword, usually a plain "BCBA" or "Board Certified Behavior Analyst". We found only three salaried ads with an entry-level or new-grad title, and they came from a single employer. Ads with senior, lead, manager or supervisor titles (101 ads from 56 employers) posted a median of $91,875, about $2,300 above staff BCBA ads. Experience, in other words, rarely shows up as a separate posting. It shows up as where you land inside the range. If you are newly certified, our BCBA starting salary guide covers what first offers look like, and our clinical director jobs guide covers the leadership roles above staff BCBA.

BCBA salary by state

State still matters, but less than most salary-by-state lists suggest. Among the 14 states where at least 25 employers posted a salary, the median ran from $84,500 in Illinois to $104,000 in Maryland. Eleven of those 14 states sat between $87,500 and $100,000.

Range chart of posted BCBA salaries by state, October 2026, showing the middle half of employers and the median: Maryland $104,000, North Carolina $100,000, Arizona $100,000, Georgia $98,168, California $95,000, Virginia $95,000, Colorado $92,500, Texas $90,000, Massachusetts $90,000, Tennessee $89,000, Michigan $88,750, Connecticut $87,500, Missouri $85,588, Illinois $84,500.
Maryland, North Carolina, Arizona and Georgia post the highest BCBA salaries among states with 25 or more employers in the sample.

These state samples are small, from 25 to 49 employers each, so treat a gap of a few thousand dollars as noise. The large gaps are real enough to act on: a BCBA weighing a move from Illinois or Missouri to Maryland or North Carolina is looking at roughly $14,000 to $19,500 more in posted pay. For deeper state breakdowns with cost-of-living context, see our state guides for Maryland, North Carolina, Arizona and Illinois, or the full BCBA salary by state overview.

The employment gap is real. It just is not in the salary line.

Demand for BCBAs has grown fast. The BACB's employment demand report, prepared with labor market analytics firm Lightcast, counted 132,307 US job postings requiring or preferring BCBA or BCBA-D certification in 2025, a 28% increase over 2024. As of October 9, 2026, the BACB's registry listed 81,560 active BCBAs and BCBA-Ds in the United States (78,517 BCBAs and 3,043 BCBA-Ds).

1.6
2025 BCBA job postings for every active US BCBA and BCBA-D (132,307 postings, BACB/Lightcast; 81,560 certificants, BACB registry, October 2026)

That ratio needs one caution. Postings are a full year's flow, and certificant counts are a snapshot, so 1.6 is not the number of open jobs per BCBA on any given day. It is still a useful way to compare markets. In Maryland the ratio was 3.5 postings per certificant, in Kansas 3.0, in North Carolina 2.9 and in Georgia 2.6. Florida, home to the second-largest BCBA workforce in the country, had 0.6.

If tight supply pushed salaries up, those high-ratio states would post the highest pay. Mostly they do not. Across the 27 states where we had both a demand ratio and at least 12 employers posting a salary, the relationship between demand pressure and posted pay was weak (a rank correlation of roughly 0.15). The eight states with the highest ratios posted a median of $91,250. The eight with the lowest posted $89,750. Maryland, North Carolina and Georgia pair high demand with high pay, but Kansas and Missouri pair high demand with some of the lowest posted salaries in the sample, and Florida pays close to the national median despite its surplus.

What this means for you: the shortage shows up as more openings, not as a higher number in the job ad. Your advantage is choice: more employers to compare, and room to negotiate inside the posted range, plus caseload, schedule and benefits.

What changes a BCBA's pay

Salaried vs hourly

About one in three paid ads (637 of 1,871) quoted an hourly rate. The median was $75 an hour, but hourly BCBA rates are not comparable to a salary divided by 2,080 hours. Some hourly roles pay only for billable or session time, so ask whether travel, documentation and cancellations are paid. Most hourly ads (404 of 637) were tagged part-time, per diem or contract. Hourly ads tagged part-time, PRN or contract posted a median of $80. Hourly ads tagged full-time posted $70. Our BCBA hourly rate guide walks through how to convert an hourly offer into an annual comparison.

Schools pay a little less up front

Salaried ads from school districts and school-based roles (87 employers) posted a median of $86,090, against $90,000 for everyone else. The hourly gap was wider: $62 for school-based hourly roles (41 employers) against $78 elsewhere. School jobs can offer other trade-offs, such as an academic-year schedule and, in public districts, pension plans, which our school-based BCBA jobs guide covers.

Remote work does not pay less

Remote or telehealth salaried ads (23 employers) posted a median of $89,500, effectively the same as the national figure. Employers are not discounting remote BCBA roles, at least in what they advertise.

Sign-on bonuses appear in some ads

About 5% of all BCBA ads advertised a sign-on bonus in the job title. A bonus is one-time money, sometimes with a repayment clause if you leave early, so compare offers on base salary first and treat the bonus as a tiebreaker.

How to use posted BCBA salary data in a negotiation

The median salaried range in our sample ran from $82,000 to $100,000, an $18,000 spread. Only 5% of salaried ads posted a single number instead of a range. That spread is your negotiating room, and the employer has put it in writing.

  1. Anchor to the top half of the posted range. If you bring supervision experience, a specialty such as severe behavior or feeding, or a second language your caseload needs, ask for the upper half and say why.
  2. Ask how productivity is measured. A $95,000 salary with a 30-billable-hour weekly requirement can be worth less than $88,000 at 25 hours. Ask for the target, how cancellations count, and what happens if you miss it.
  3. Price the benefits. In our earlier analysis of the same October 2026 ads, at least 42% of the 688 employers whose full descriptions we read mentioned a continuing education benefit, and almost none advertised paid professional liability coverage. Our guides to free BCBA CEUs and BCBA liability insurance show how to put a dollar value on both.
  4. Use competing offers. With 1.6 annual postings per certificant nationally, it is worth seeking more than one offer. A second written offer is the strongest evidence you can bring.

How we built these numbers

We searched LinkedIn and SimplyHired for "BCBA" across the United States on October 1, 2026 kept ads posted within the previous 12 months (plus a few undated ads), and dropped ads marked expired. We removed duplicates where the same employer posted the same pay in the same location, which also merges ads found on both sites. That left 3,904 ads, and 48% of them listed a usable pay figure. We counted a closed range or a single stated figure from the employer's pay field or the ad text, and we excluded "up to" and "starting at" figures and estimates the job board generated itself. Annual figures had to fall between $40,000 and $250,000 and hourly figures between $20 and $200. Salaried figures exclude ads tagged part-time only. Each figure is the midpoint of the posted range, and medians are calculated per employer, except the range floor and ceiling, which are per ad, so that no single chain outweighs the rest; the largest employer accounted for 5% of salaried ads.

Posted pay has limits. It leaves out bonuses, benefits and raises after hire, and employers that publish pay may differ from those that do not. A small share of ads came from staffing agencies, which often post their client clinics' pay. The demand ratio compares 2025 postings with October 2026 certificant counts, and Lightcast counts BCBA and BCBA-D postings together, which is why we compare them with BCBAs and BCBA-Ds combined.

Frequently asked questions

What is the average BCBA salary in 2026?

The median posted BCBA salary was $89,934 across 595 US employers in October 2026, with the middle half of employers posting $82,500 to $97,500. Indeed reports a $91,998 average base salary for board certified behavior analysts.

How much does a BCBA make an hour?

Hourly BCBA ads posted a median of $75 an hour across 355 employers, with the middle half at $61 to $90. Many hourly roles pay only for billable or session time, so compare them with salaried roles carefully.

Which state pays BCBAs the most?

Among states with at least 25 employers posting a salary, Maryland had the highest median at $104,000, followed by North Carolina and Arizona at $100,000 and Georgia at $98,168. Illinois was lowest at $84,500.

Can a BCBA make $100,000?

Yes. About 21% of employers in our sample posted a salary midpoint of $100,000 or more, and the median top of a posted range was exactly $100,000. Maryland, North Carolina, Arizona and Georgia had the highest posted medians.

Do BCBAs get paid more because of the shortage?

Not much in the posted salary. States with the most job postings per certificant did not post meaningfully higher salaries. The shortage mainly gives BCBAs more offers and more room to negotiate.

Is the BCBA salary different from the behavior analyst salary?

They usually describe the same job. BCBA is the certification most behavior analyst employers ask for, and the figures in this guide come from ads found by searching for BCBA. State-licensed titles, such as licensed behavior analyst, follow each state's own rules.

The bottom line

A BCBA salary in 2026 centers on about $90,000, and most employers post somewhere between $80,000 and $100,000. The national employment gap is real, with 1.6 postings for every certificant in 2025, but it rarely shows up as a higher number in the ad. It shows up as choice. Use the posted range as your floor, collect more than one offer, and negotiate the parts of the job that are not in the headline salary.
