Free BCBA CEUs in 2026: Where to Get Them and Which Employers Pay

Free BCBA CEUs are not a gimmick: you can earn every one of the 32 CEUs you need for recertification without paying. The BACB sets no minimum price for continuing education, and its ACE Provider Handbook says plainly that ACE events "may be offered free of charge." What it does set are rules about who can issue CEUs, how self-paced courses must check your participation, and what you can claim without attending anything at all. This guide covers the free routes that hold up in an audit, what the July 1, 2026 ACE rules spell out, and an employment benefit most BCBAs never put on the negotiating table: their employer's CEU budget.

42%
of 688 ABA employers hiring BCBAs in October 2026 listed a continuing education benefit in their job ad (CertifyndABA analysis)

BCBA CEU requirements in one paragraph

Under the BCBA Handbook (updated 06/2026), you need 32 CEUs in each 2-year recertification cycle. Four must be in ethics, which the BACB defines as content on its ethics requirements or on cultural and contextual responsiveness. If you supervised an RBT, a BCaBA or a fieldwork trainee at any point in the cycle, 3 must be in supervision. Fifty minutes of learning equals 1 CEU and 25 minutes equals 0.5. CEUs must be earned inside the cycle you apply them to, extras do not carry over, repeating the same activity does not count, and you cannot make up missing CEUs during the 30-day reinstatement window. For the full breakdown, see our BCBA CEU requirements guide.

What 32 CEUs cost if you pay for them

Paid CEUs are not expensive, but they add up alongside the BACB's $215 recertification fee. Here is what a full cycle cost at three large online providers when we checked their sites on October 7, 2026:

Option Price Per CEU
Special Learning CE Library (12 months, 32.5 CEUs incl. ethics and supervision)$199about $6
CEUniverse 32-CEU bundle (sale price)$216.99about $7
Behavior Analyst CE 32-credit bundle (sale price)$217about $7
Single courses bought one at a timeabout $320about $10
BACB recertification application (BCBA)$215every 2 years

So a BCBA paying out of pocket spends roughly $415 to $535 per cycle on CEUs plus the BACB fee, before any conference travel. Free CEUs can take the CEU part of that to zero. An employer benefit can take care of the rest.

Where to find free BCBA CEUs that count toward recertification

The handbook recognizes three types of continuing education: Learning, Teaching and Scholarship. There is no cap on how many CEUs you earn through any one type. Each type has a free path.

1. Free events from ACE Providers (Learning)

This is where most free BCBA CEUs come from. Several ACE Providers run free events, usually to build a following or recruit staff. In October 2026, examples included:

  • The ABA Clubhouse (Behaviorist Book Club): a weekly live CEU event plus on-demand recordings, and a directory that lists hundreds of no-cost courses from other providers.
  • Behavior University: monthly free webinars, each 100 minutes long and worth 2 CEUs.
  • Full Spectrum ABA: a free CEU app with recorded talks by its clinical leaders.
  • Blossom Children's Center: a free podcast series where you complete a quiz after each episode to earn the CEU.
  • Paid platforms' free tiers: most large CE marketplaces keep a few $0 courses in their catalogs, and some, such as CEUniverse, run loyalty points that convert into free CEUs.

Free offerings change often, so treat any list, including this one, as a starting point. Before you spend time on an event, look the organization up in the BACB's ACE Provider Verification Registry. A certificate from a group that is not an Authorized ACE Provider is worthless in an audit.

2. Your employer's in-house CEUs (Learning)

Some ABA companies are ACE Providers themselves and run monthly CEU trainings for their own clinicians. The ACE Provider Handbook allows events that are "limited to in-house participants only," so these count exactly like a public event as long as you receive a certificate. In our job-ad analysis below, 14% of employers advertised free or in-house CEUs. If you already work somewhere that offers them, this is usually the fastest way to cover your ethics and supervision CEUs.

3. Reviewing journal articles (Scholarship)

This is the most overlooked free CEU source. Under the handbook, writing a peer review or decision letter for a behavior-analytic article submitted to a peer-reviewed journal earns 1 CEU per review. Publishing a behavior-analytic article in a peer-reviewed journal earns 8 CEUs. Documentation is a confirmation from the journal or editor, with title and author details redacted. If you have research experience, volunteering as an ad hoc reviewer for a behavior analysis journal turns work you might do anyway into CEUs.

4. Presenting (Teaching)

If you present at an ACE event, the time you spend presenting counts on the same scale as attending: 25 minutes of instruction equals 0.5 CEU. A single instruction session counts, so a talk at your company's in-house training or a state association conference qualifies if an ACE Provider runs it. Teaching a behavior analysis course at an accredited university also counts, with a letter from the department chair as documentation.

5. BACB volunteer roles (Learning)

The BACB awards Learning CEUs to certificants who serve as subject matter experts on its exam development committees (item writing, item review and form review). Terms run two years, the work is unpaid, and the BACB covers travel to at least one in-person workshop a year. When we checked on October 7, 2026, the BACB said it was not currently recruiting, so watch its site for the next call.

July 2026 ACE rules for free self-paced BCBA CEUs

The 2026 ACE Provider Handbook, effective July 1, 2026, spells out how self-paced (asynchronous) events must confirm you actually took part. Its examples of acceptable measures are answering questions that test knowledge from the event (at least 3 per CEU) or completing other activities that require active responding. It lists three non-examples:

  • code words embedded in a recorded presentation
  • time logged in to the platform, as the only measure
  • a written statement that you engaged with the content

This matters for free CEUs because a recorded video with nothing to answer is the cheapest event to give away. If you find a free recording with no knowledge check or other active task, check the provider's page to make sure the course meets the current handbook before you count on it. The handbook also spells out two other formats: journal clubs must be live group meetings, are capped at 1 CEU per article, and reading time does not count; podcasts can be done alone if you complete questions afterward.

Which employers pay for your CEUs: data from 688 job ads

To see how common CEU benefits are, we read the full text of BCBA job ads collected on October 1, 2026 from LinkedIn and SimplyHired. We kept direct employers only (staffing agencies removed) and took one randomly chosen ad per employer, so large chains count once. That left 688 US employers.

Horizontal bar chart of continuing education benefits in BCBA job ads from 688 US ABA employers, October 2026: any CE benefit mentioned 42%, CEU stipend, allowance or reimbursement 18%, vague CE support only 16%, free or in-house CEUs 14%, paid CE days off 2%. Callout: 29 employers stated an amount, median $750 a year, middle half $500 to $1,000.
Four in ten employers mention a CE benefit, but fewer than one in five put money behind it in the ad.
  • 290 employers (42%) mentioned a continuing education benefit of some kind. This is a floor: when we hand-checked a sample of ads our method had marked as not offering one, about 6 of 15 did offer one in wording we had not matched.
  • 122 (18%) put money behind it: a CEU stipend, allowance, reimbursement or budget.
  • 97 (14%) advertised free CEUs, in-house CEU trainings or access to a CEU library. 38 offered both money and free CEUs.
  • 109 (16%) used vague wording such as "CEU support" or "continuing education opportunities" without saying what it covers.
  • 13 (2%) mentioned paid days off for CEU events, and 13 said they cover recertification or certification fees.

Only 29 employers put a dollar figure on their CEU benefit (where a stipend grows with tenure, we counted the starting amount). Among them the median was $750, the middle half ranged from $500 to $1,000, and the full range ran from $150 to $2,500. The single most common figure was $500, listed by 11 of the 29. Typical wording looked like "$1,500 annual CEU stipend, free in-house CEUs" (The Treetop ABA Therapy), "$500 Annual CEU Reimbursement + 1 Paid CEU Day" (Autism Care Partners) and "CEU stipend starting at $750/year and increasing with tenure" (Applaud Autism Services).

Put that next to the cost table above. A $500 annual stipend is $1,000 per two-year cycle, which is more than the cost of 32 paid CEUs, and enough for the $215 BACB fee too if the employer lets you spend it that way. Some stipends only start after a year or grow with tenure, so the first cycle may be leaner. Either way, a CEU budget is real money, and it is fair to ask about it.

How to get your CEUs paid for when you job hunt

  1. Ask what the benefit actually is. "CEU support" can mean a $1,500 budget or a monthly lunch-and-learn. Ask for the annual dollar amount, whether it renews each year, whether it covers the BACB recertification fee, and whether you get paid time to attend.
  2. Ask whether the company is an ACE Provider. If it runs in-house CEU events, you may cover your 4 ethics and 3 supervision CEUs without spending your stipend at all.
  3. Negotiate it like pay. If a salary offer will not move, a CEU stipend, paid CE days or conference travel is often easier for an employer to approve. Our BCBA salary negotiation guide covers how to frame the ask.
  4. Read the fine print. In the ads we read, some stipends started only after a year of employment, some grew with tenure, and a few applied only to full-time staff. Ask whether you repay any of it if you leave.
  5. Get it in writing. Make sure the stipend amount appears in your offer letter, not just in the job ad.

If you are comparing employers more broadly, our list of the best ABA companies to work for looks at benefits beyond salary, and our BCBA staffing agency guide draws on the same job-ad collection.

A free 32-CEU plan for one cycle

Here is one way to fill a full cycle at no cost, assuming you supervise and therefore need the supervision CEUs:

  • Ethics (4 CEUs): your employer's in-house ethics training, or two free 2-CEU ethics webinars from ACE Providers. Check that each certificate lists the CEUs as ethics, because entries must show the category in the documentation.
  • Supervision (3 CEUs): an in-house supervision training, or a free provider event that lists supervision CEUs on the certificate. The 8-hour supervision training required to become a supervisor is a separate requirement; see our supervisor guide.
  • General (25 CEUs): one free live webinar a month for 12 months (2 CEUs each, 24 CEUs) plus one journal review or a 50-minute presentation at an ACE event.

Spread it across the two years. Enter each CEU in your BACB portal account as soon as you have the certificate, keep a copy, and do not leave the last few for the final month: the recertification application only opens 45 days before your date, and missing CEUs cannot be made up afterward.

Frequently asked questions

Can all 32 BCBA CEUs be free?

Yes. The BACB does not set CEU prices, and its ACE Provider Handbook allows free events. Every CEU still has to come from an Authorized ACE Provider, a qualifying university course, a BACB activity, or a Teaching or Scholarship activity.

Do free CEUs count for the ethics requirement?

Yes, if most of the event focuses on ethics or cultural and contextual responsiveness and the certificate lists the CEUs as ethics. Events that only mention the Ethics Code in passing do not qualify.

How do I know if a free CEU provider is legitimate?

Search for the organization in the BACB's ACE Provider Verification Registry before you attend. If it is not listed as an Authorized ACE Provider, its certificates will not count toward recertification.

Can I get CEUs for reviewing journal articles?

Yes. The BCBA Handbook awards 1 Scholarship CEU for each peer review or decision letter on a behavior-analytic article submitted to a peer-reviewed journal, documented by a confirmation from the journal or editor.

How much do employers pay for BCBA CEUs?

In our October 2026 sample of 688 employers, 29 listed a dollar amount. The median was $750, most fell between $500 and $1,000, and the most common figure was $500.

Do self-paced free CEUs still count after July 1, 2026?

Yes, if the course confirms participation. The 2026 ACE Provider Handbook gives knowledge-check questions (at least 3 per CEU) or other active responding as examples. Code words in a recording and written attestations do not count, and neither does time logged in as the only measure.

The bottom line

Free BCBA CEUs are easy to find. The work is making sure each one comes from an Authorized ACE Provider, carries the right category on the certificate and meets the July 2026 participation rules. Then look at the other side of the ledger: four in ten employers advertise a CE benefit, and the ones that state an amount usually offer enough to cover a cycle's CEUs. When you weigh your next offer, count the CEU budget as part of the pay.
