Online BCBA programs now train most of the people who sit for the BCBA exam, and the newest data on how they do arrived this month. In October 2026 the Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) published its 2025 university pass-rate report. It covers 204 programs and 8,558 first-time candidates. Online-only programs supplied 76% of those candidates, and 48% of them passed on the first try. Candidates from on-campus programs passed at 74%. This guide reads that report program by program, adds verified tuition, and explains the 2032 accreditation rule that changes which online BCBA programs will still count.
Why this matters for your career: employers posted 132,307 job ads that required or preferred the BCBA in 2025, up 28% from 2024 (BACB and Lightcast, 2026). The US has 82,129 BCBAs and BCBA-Ds as of October 27, 2026 (BACB certificant data). That is about 1.6 postings for every certificant. The bottleneck is not demand. It is the path from a graduate program to a passing exam score, and the program you pick shapes your odds on that path.
What makes an online BCBA program qualify
An online BCBA program is any program that delivers the coursework the BACB requires, mostly or fully online. There are three common types, and they are not interchangeable:
- An ABA master's degree. The degree and the BCBA coursework come together, usually in 30 to 45 semester credits (Ball State's online M.A. is 30 credits; USF's online M.A. is 42).
- A master's in a related field with an ABA concentration. Special education, psychology or counseling degrees that include the BCBA course sequence. Arizona State University's online M.A. in Special Education (Applied Behavior Analysis) is the largest example.
- A graduate certificate. Coursework only, for people who already hold a master's in any field. Florida Tech's online ABA certificate is the best known.
All three can lead to the BCBA under Pathway 2 today. Pathway 2 needs a master's degree from a qualifying institution plus 315 hours of graduate behavior-analytic coursework (BACB BCBA Handbook, June 2026). Since January 1, 2026, the program confirms your coursework through a Coursework Attestation by a designated program contact. That replaced the old "Verified Course Sequence" check, so ask a program how it handles the attestation rather than whether it is a VCS.
Coursework is only one requirement. You also need 2,000 hours of supervised fieldwork (or 1,500 concentrated hours) and a passing exam score. Many online programs leave fieldwork placement and supervision to you. If you need to buy supervision, our check of 17 providers found a median of $75 an hour; see remote BCBA supervision and the fieldwork requirements guide.
2025 pass rates for online BCBA programs
The table lists every program in the BACB report with at least 20 first-time candidates that teaches fully online or both online and on campus. The BACB reports first-time pass rates only, and only for programs with more than six first-time candidates. The 2024 column comes from the BACB's 2024 report where the same program appears.

Source: BACB, BCBA Examination Pass Rates for University Training Programs 2025 (updated 10/2026) and 2024 (updated 12/2025). "n/a" means we could not match the same program in the 2024 report. Program names are shortened. Two Spanish programs with 58 and 172 candidates are left out of the table.
The BACB warns against reading these numbers as a league table. Its report says pass rates "are historical outcomes; they are not rankings, endorsements, or guarantees." Use them as one input, and always read the candidate count next to the rate. A 100% rate from 22 people tells you less than a 69% rate from 807.
Online vs on-campus: the gap is not only about size
Across all 204 programs in the report, the overall 2025 first-time pass rate was 51%, the first year the exam followed the 6th edition Test Content Outline. Split by format, the gap is wide:
| Program group | Programs | First-time candidates | Pass rate (all candidates) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online only | 90 | 6,516 | 48.3% |
| Online only, 100 or fewer candidates | 81 | 1,494 | 50.3% |
| Online and on campus | 41 | 1,163 | 48.5% |
| Hybrid | 27 | 369 | 61.0% |
| On campus | 46 | 510 | 73.9% |
| ABAI-accredited (any format) | 25 | 295 | 77.6% |
CertifyndABA analysis of the BACB 2025 report. Pass rate is weighted by candidates (total passes divided by total candidates). Our parse matches the BACB's own totals: 204 programs, 8,558 candidates, and a 79.3% mean pass rate for accredited programs.
A fair objection is that a few giant online programs drag the average down. The data does not support that as the whole story. Remove the nine online programs with more than 100 candidates, and the 81 smaller online programs still pass 50.3% of their candidates. The gap also does not prove that online teaching is worse. On-campus programs are smaller and more selective, and many are research programs with built-in practicum. Online students are more often working full time as RBTs while they study. The format is a signal to ask questions, not a verdict.
Spread matters more than the average. Among the 120 programs with at least 10 candidates, the middle half passed between 43% and 72% (median 56.5%). Thirty-five programs passed 80% or more, and 24 passed under 30%. Online programs sit at both ends: the University of South Florida's online M.A. passed 86% of 44 candidates, while Walden passed 15% of 27.
The programs that train most BCBAs all slipped in 2025
Candidate volume is concentrated. The 10 largest programs produced 5,446 first-time candidates, 54.7% of all 9,955 who tested in 2025, with a mean pass rate of 42.9% (BACB, 2025). Nine of the ten are fully online.
Every one of the six largest US programs posted a lower first-time pass rate in 2025 than in 2024. Arizona State fell from 49% to 44%, Ball State from 53% to 50%, Capella from 44% to 41%, Florida Tech's certificate from 71% to 69%, National University from 42% to 35%, and West Florida from 49% to 43%. The University of Cincinnati fell further, from 51% to 38%.
The likely reason is the exam itself. The BACB notes that 2025 was the first year the exam was based on the 6th edition Test Content Outline, and the listed programs fell from a combined 54.0% in 2024 to 50.4% in 2025 (our calculation from both reports). A program whose rate held steady through the change is a good sign. If you are about to sit the new exam, our BCBA study guide and practice questions are built on the 6th edition.
Accreditation and the 2032 cutoff
ABAI accreditation is the clearest quality signal in the report. The 25 accredited programs had a mean pass rate of 79.3%, against 53.2% for the other 179 programs, a 26.1-point gap (BACB, 2025). But those accredited programs supplied only 295 of 8,558 listed candidates, 3.4%. Most of them are on campus.
Few accredited programs teach online. In the 2025 report, the accredited programs with an online option are The Chicago School's online M.S. in ABA (60% of 43 candidates), St. Cloud State University's M.S. in ABA, delivered on campus and online (22 of 22 passed), Regis College's online M.S. (82% of 11) and Ohio State's online M.A. (44% of 9, combining 2024 and 2025).
This matters because of the rule quoted earlier. From January 1, 2032, only an accredited master's will qualify you to apply. If your program takes two to three years and fieldwork takes another one to two, a student who starts in 2028 or later could hit that date. Accreditation status changes, so confirm it on the ABAI accreditation site, not on a third-party list. Our guide on how to become a BCBA explains each pathway.
What online BCBA programs cost
Price and pass rate barely move together. We checked tuition on each program's own page in October 2026. Fees, books and fieldwork supervision are extra.
| Program | Published tuition | 2025 pass rate |
|---|---|---|
| Ball State University, online M.A. (30 credits) | $464 per credit resident, $696 nonresident, plus $25 per credit online fee; about $14,670 or $21,630 by our math | 50% |
| University of West Florida, online M.S. (39 to 45 credits) | $15,048 to $17,363 in state; $19,275 to $22,240 out of state | 43% |
| Purdue University Global, M.S. (45 quarter credits) | $420 per credit; about $18,900 by our math | 46% |
| Florida Institute of Technology, online M.A. (33 credits) | $24,120 total (2026-27) | 69% (certificate) |
| University of South Florida, online M.A. (42 credits) | $25,200, one rate for all residencies | 86% |
| Capella University, M.S. ABA (60 quarter credits) | $540 per credit; $32,400 estimate, effective July 13, 2026 | 41% |
| Pepperdine University, online M.S. (30 units) | $2,060 per unit; $61,800 | 47% |
Tuition from each university's program or tuition page, checked October 13 to 27, 2026. Florida Tech's pass rate is for its online ABA certificate, the coursework inside its M.A.; the BACB does not list the M.A. separately. Arizona State and National University did not publish a total we could verify.
The most expensive program on the list has a lower first-time pass rate than three programs that cost less than half as much. For the full cost of the credential, including exam and supervision fees, see our BCBA certification cost breakdown.
Your employer may pay part of it. In our review of BCBA job ads from 688 US employers (October 2026), 93 (13.5%) mentioned tuition help, student loan repayment or public service loan forgiveness. That help is worth asking about before you enroll.
How to choose an online BCBA program: a checklist
- Read the pass rate with its candidate count. Look up the program in the BACB's university pass-rate reports. Treat any rate based on fewer than 20 candidates with caution.
- Check at least two years. A program that held steady from 2024 to 2025 handled the new exam outline well.
- Confirm accreditation if you might apply in 2032 or later. Use the ABAI site, not marketing copy.
- Ask who arranges fieldwork. Does the program place you, match you with a supervisor, or leave it to you? Supervision you buy yourself can add thousands of dollars.
- Compare total tuition, not per-credit price. Quarter credits and semester credits are different sizes (1 semester credit equals 1.5 quarter credits).
- Ask how the program supports exam prep. Mock exams aligned to the 6th edition outline are a reasonable request.
- Confirm the Coursework Attestation process. Ask who the designated program contact is and how fast attestations are completed after you finish.
What the job market looks like when you finish
The demand side of this story is strong. Employers posted 132,307 BCBA job ads in 2025 (BACB and Lightcast, 2026). About 9,955 people took the BCBA exam for the first time that year, and roughly half passed, so first attempts added about 5,100 new BCBAs. Job ads are not unique jobs, since one opening can be posted many times. But the direction is clear: postings grew 28% in a year, and there are about 1.6 for every BCBA in the country.
The gap is wider in some states. Using 2025 postings and December 2025 certificant counts, Maryland had about 3.5 postings per BCBA, Kansas 3.0 and North Carolina 2.9; Florida had 0.6. Our BCBA jobs report breaks this down by state, and the BCBA salary guide shows a median posted salary near $90,000.
The shortage of BCBAs is not a shortage of interest. Nearly 10,000 people sat the exam for the first time in 2025. It is a shortage of first-attempt passes.
Online BCBA programs: frequently asked questions
Can you become a BCBA completely online?
You can complete the coursework online, and many people do. You still need 2,000 supervised fieldwork hours with real clients and a passing score on the proctored exam. Fieldwork supervision can be remote if your supervisor oversees your clients, but the hours themselves are hands-on work.
What is the cheapest online BCBA program?
Among the programs we verified, Ball State's online M.A. (about $14,670 for Indiana residents) and the University of West Florida's online M.S. (from about $15,048 in state) were the lowest. Both are large, both are online, and both passed 43% to 50% of first-time candidates in 2025.
Is an online BCBA program worse than an on-campus one?
Not by itself. Online candidates passed at 48% and on-campus candidates at 74% in 2025, but on-campus programs are smaller and often selective. Several online programs, including USF, Simmons, Bay Path and Western Connecticut State, passed more than 70%.
Does a graduate certificate count if I already have a master's?
Yes, through December 31, 2031. A certificate covers the 315 hours of coursework for Pathway 2, and your master's can be in any field from a qualifying institution. From January 1, 2032, the BACB requires an accredited master's, so a certificate alone will not qualify after that date.
How long does an online BCBA program take?
Most online master's programs take about two years; Arizona State says most students finish its 30-credit program in five semesters. Fieldwork often runs alongside coursework. Our guide on how long it takes to become a BCBA covers the full timeline.
