Remote BCBA supervision is allowed, and it is easy to buy: we found 20 providers that post their prices online, with a median of $75 per supervised hour. What it cannot do is replace a place to work. The BACB still requires you and your supervisor to have a formal relationship with every client you count hours on. So for most trainees, the real question is not "remote or in person." It is "does my job come with a qualified supervisor, and if not, who can I legally bring in?"
This guide covers the three ways trainees actually find a BCBA supervisor in 2026: through an employer, through the BACB's own search tool for supervision near you, and through paid remote BCBA supervision. It also shows what each one costs, using prices we checked on providers' own pages on October 15, 2026.
Where BCBA trainees find a supervisor
The BACB's own handbook suggests an order. Start by asking someone at your organization. Next, ask faculty at the university where you take your coursework. If neither works, search the BACB Certificant Registry for BCBAs who say they are willing to supervise trainees (BACB, BCBA Handbook, updated June 2026).
That order makes sense once you see the rules. Every fieldwork hour must be tied to real client services, and your supervisor needs a direct relationship with, or oversight of, those clients. A supervisor who already works where you work meets that rule automatically. An outside supervisor has to set it up through a contract. That is why the three routes below are not equal.
| Route | Typical cost to you | Main catch |
|---|---|---|
| Supervisor at your employer | Free at some employers; many ads leave the cost unstated | Not every ABA job offers it; ask before you accept |
| Local BCBA from the Certificant Registry | Usually paid by you; local rates were not part of our price check | Needs a contract with your clients' organization, and your employer's written permission where that applies |
| Remote BCBA supervision company | $40 to $100 per hour, or $198 to $725 a month for packages that state their hours | Same client-relationship rule; some states also require a supervisor licensed in your state |
Route 1: Take a job that includes supervision
For most trainees this is the cheapest and simplest route. When we read 362 BCBA-trainee job ads from 87 U.S. employers in September 2026, 59 employers (68%) said the job comes with fieldwork supervision. Only 15 employers (17%) said outright that the supervision is free; the other 44 left the cost unstated, and 28 did not mention supervision at all. That gap is worth closing before you sign anything (CertifyndABA analysis of LinkedIn and SimplyHired ads, September 30, 2026; full method in our BCBA internship guide).
Ask these questions in the interview, not after the offer:
- Is supervision free, and is it in writing? Ask whether any repayment or stay-on clause comes with it.
- How many hours a month will I get? You need at least 5% of your fieldwork hours supervised each month (10% for Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork under the current rules).
- How much is individual and how much is group? Group time cannot be more than half of your supervised hours.
- Will my tasks count? At least 60% of your fieldwork must be unrestricted activities such as assessment, program writing and data analysis. A pure RBT schedule will not get you there.
- Who signs my forms if my supervisor leaves? Supervisors change jobs too, and you need a plan for a replacement.
One trap catches many RBTs. The BCBA who supervises your RBT work is meeting the RBT ongoing-supervision rule, which is 5% of your service hours each month. That is not fieldwork supervision. It only counts toward BCBA fieldwork if you have a fieldwork contract, the supervisor is qualified for fieldwork, and the activities meet both sets of rules (BACB, 7 FAQs for RBTs Pursuing BCBA or BCaBA Certification, 2023). Our BCBA-in-training jobs guide covers how to find roles built for trainees, and questions to ask in an ABA interview has more to bring to the table.
Route 2: Find BCBA supervision near you with the Certificant Registry
If your job does not include a qualified supervisor, the BACB's free Certificant Registry is the closest thing to a "BCBA supervision near me" search. The handbook tells trainees to use it "to identify individuals who are willing to supervise trainees." The search form lets you filter for BCBAs who have completed supervision training and who say they are willing to supervise people pursuing BCBA or BCaBA certification. You can also search by state, or by ZIP code within a radius of 5 to 200 miles. Supervisors opt in to these filters themselves, so treat a match as a lead, not a promise.
The Registry is also how you vet any supervisor, local or remote. Before you sign a contract, confirm three things:
- The person is an active BCBA with no current disciplinary sanctions.
- They completed the 8-hour supervision training. They must upload that certificate before signing a supervision contract, and the Registry shows it.
- They have been certified for at least one year. A newer BCBA can still supervise, but only while getting monthly consultation from a qualified consulting supervisor.
A local supervisor who is not part of your organization still has to meet the client-relationship rule. In practice that means a contract with the organization where your clients receive services, written permission to see client information, and, when applicable, your on-site employer's written permission. The BACB requires your supervision contract to include that permission statement.
Route 3: Remote BCBA supervision
Remote BCBA supervision fits the rules better than many trainees expect. Supervisor-trainee contacts only have to be "real-time," so live video meetings count. The monthly observation of you working with a client can be in person, which the BACB prefers, or by live video or recorded video (BACB, BCBA Handbook). One limit: a recorded session your supervisor watches alone counts toward the observation requirement but not toward your contacts or supervised hours (BACB, Supervised Fieldwork FAQs).
The bigger limits come from a January 2026 BACB post, updated September 30, 2026. It says remote supervision is allowed "only if" the supervisor already knows and oversees your clients, that clients must know about and agree to remote observation, and that some states require your supervisor to be licensed in the state where you provide services. The BACB tells trainees to "exercise caution" (BACB, Fieldwork: Getting It Right).
Remote supervision changes where your supervisor sits. It does not remove the need for a real clinical setting with real clients.
So before you pay a remote supervision company, get your employer to agree in writing, and check your state's licensure rules. Be careful with any offer that seems to work around the client-relationship rule; ask the provider to show you how their setup meets it.
What remote BCBA supervision costs in 2026
On October 15, 2026, we looked for providers that post a price for BCBA fieldwork supervision and confirmed each price on the provider's own page. Search snippets were often out of date, so we did not count any price we could not see on the page. Twenty providers made the list: companies, solo BCBAs, one university program and five supervisors from a public remote-supervisor directory. Eight more providers showed no public price.
| Price type | Providers | Median | Range |
|---|---|---|---|
| Individual supervision, per hour | 10 | $72.50 | $40 to $99 |
| Group supervision, per hour | 5 | $60 | $40 to $75 |
| One flat hourly rate (type not stated) | 7 | $75 | $50 to $100 |
| Monthly package (6 to 8 hours) | 4 | about $64 per hour | $198 to $725 a month |
Combining individual and flat hourly rates gives 17 prices with a median of $75. The middle half sits between $65 and $75, inside a full range of $40 to $100. The cheapest options were one directory listing at $40 an hour and a $198 monthly package that includes 6.5 hours.
Here is what that means for the whole credential. Supervised Fieldwork is 2,000 hours at 5%, so at least 100 supervised hours. At $75 an hour that is about $7,500. If you use the most group time allowed (half your hours) at the $60 group median, it drops to about $6,750. Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork is 1,500 hours at 10%, or at least 150 supervised hours: about $11,250 at $75. Under the 2027 rules, Concentrated drops to 7.5%, which is about 113 hours or roughly $8,400. These are minimums. Each month has to meet the percentage on its own, so most trainees end up a little above 100 or 150 hours.
2022 rules vs. 2027 rules: which supervision math applies to you
The rules that apply depend on when you submit your application, not when you started fieldwork. Apply by December 31, 2026, and the 2022 rules apply. Apply on or after January 1, 2027, and the 2027 rules apply. If you are unsure, the BACB suggests meeting and documenting both.
| Requirement | Apply by Dec 31, 2026 | Apply Jan 1, 2027 or later |
|---|---|---|
| Supervised Fieldwork | 2,000 hours, 5% supervised | 2,000 hours, 5% supervised |
| Concentrated Supervised Fieldwork | 1,500 hours, 10% supervised | 1,500 hours, 7.5% supervised |
| Fieldwork hours per month | 20 to 130 | 20 to 160 |
| Supervisor contacts per month | 4 (Supervised) or 6 (Concentrated) | Not listed in the 2027 tables; observation is tracked in minutes |
| Observation with a client | At least 1 per month | 60 minutes (Supervised) or 90 minutes (Concentrated) per month |
| Group supervision | No more than half | No more than half |
Under the current handbook, a month with no observation of you working with a client earns no fieldwork hours at all (BACB, BCBA Handbook). The BCBA fieldwork requirements guide walks through the rest, and restricted vs. unrestricted hours explains the 60% rule.
Before you sign: a supervision contract checklist
The BACB requires a signed supervision contract before supervision starts. The contract has to say when the supervisor would refuse to sign your hours. Read that part closely. Then check:
- ✓The supervisor's Registry entry shows active status, no sanctions and a supervision-training date before the contract date.
- ✓For an outside supervisor: a contract with your clients' organization, written permission to see client information, and your employer's written permission.
- ✓The plan delivers 5% (or 10% or 7.5%) every month, plus the monthly observation, even in months you work more hours.
- ✓You fill in the Monthly Fieldwork Verification Form every month and keep it. Only the Final Fieldwork Verification Form goes in with your application, but you need the monthly records if anything is audited.
- ✓The supervisor is not your relative, your subordinate, your employee or in another business or personal relationship with you. Paying them for supervision does not count as employing them.
Fieldwork must also be finished within five continuous years. If you are on the other side of this and want to start supervising, see how to become a BCBA supervisor.
Frequently asked questions
Can BCBA supervision be done remotely?
Yes. Supervisor-trainee contacts must be real-time, so live video counts, and the monthly client observation can be live or recorded video. The supervisor must still have a formal relationship with your clients, clients must agree to remote observation, and some states require a supervisor licensed in your state.
How much does remote BCBA supervision cost?
Across 20 providers we checked on October 15, 2026, the median posted hourly rate was $75, with the middle half between $65 and $75 and a full range of $40 to $100. Group sessions had a median of $60 per hour, and monthly packages ran $198 to $725 for 6 to 8 hours.
How do I find a BCBA supervisor near me?
Ask your employer first, then faculty at your university. After that, search the BACB Certificant Registry by ZIP code and filter for BCBAs who completed supervision training and are willing to supervise trainees.
Can my RBT supervisor also be my fieldwork supervisor?
Sometimes. RBT ongoing supervision does not count as fieldwork by itself. It can count only if you have a fieldwork contract, the supervisor is qualified to supervise fieldwork, and the activities meet both the RBT and the fieldwork requirements.
Do I need my employer's permission to use an outside supervisor?
Usually. The BACB requires every supervision contract to include a statement that you get written permission from your on-site employer or manager when applicable. An outside supervisor also needs a formal relationship with your clients, which typically means a contract with your employer.
The bottom line
Remote BCBA supervision is a real option, and posted prices center on $75 an hour. But it works best as a backup to a job with a qualified supervisor on site, not a replacement for one. If you are choosing between offers, count the supervision. A role that includes it can be worth $6,750 or more before you look at salary.
