Remote ABA Jobs 2026: Who Can Actually Work From Home

Remote ABA jobs exist, but almost all of them are for BCBAs. On October 28, 2026, we searched SimplyHired for ABA job postings tagged remote. Of 26,507 BCBA postings, 1,098 carried the remote tag (4.1%). Of 31,651 RBT postings, 39 did (0.1%). Then we read the remote ads one by one: 185 employers, 424 ads. Here is what remote ABA jobs actually are, what they pay, which ones are really work-from-home, and how to tell the difference before you apply.

Some context first. Employers posted 132,307 job ads that required or preferred the BCBA in 2025 (BACB and Lightcast, 2026). The US has 82,198 BCBAs and BCBA-Ds and 275,215 RBTs as of October 28, 2026 (BACB certificant data). That is about 1.6 BCBA postings for every certificant, so BCBAs have bargaining power. Remote work is one of the things they bargain for. It is a small slice of the market, though, and the slice is smaller and more local than the job boards make it look.

How many remote ABA jobs are there?

Few, relative to the market. The table shows SimplyHired result counts for the same search with and without the "Remote" location filter, run the same morning.

Search term All US postings Tagged remote Remote share
BCBA26,5071,0984.1%
"Behavior analyst"34,0341,0753.2%
"Applied behavior analysis"36,6409762.7%
ABA43,8911,0642.4%
RBT31,651390.1%

These are counts of remote ABA job ads, not of jobs. One employer can post the same role in 20 cities, and the same ad can match several searches. Even so, the gap is wide: a BCBA is more than 30 times as likely as an RBT to find a posting tagged remote.

Bar chart of the share of SimplyHired job postings tagged remote on October 28, 2026: BCBA 4.1% (1,098 of 26,507), ABA 2.4% (1,064 of 43,891), RBT 0.1% (39 of 31,651).
About 1 in 25 BCBA postings is tagged remote. For RBT postings it is about 1 in 800.

What remote ABA jobs actually are

We read every remote ABA job ad SimplyHired would display, about 25 pages per search: 424 ads from 185 employers. To keep one large poster from skewing the picture, we counted each employer once. Here is what those 185 employers with remote ABA jobs were hiring:

  • BCBA case roles: 153 employers (83%). Caseload BCBAs who write treatment plans, supervise RBTs over video, and run caregiver training.
  • Clinical leadership: 9 (5%). Clinical directors, assistant clinical directors, regional coordinators and university program directors. Most expect several years as a BCBA.
  • Non-clinical operations: 7 (4%). Authorizations, intake, recruiting, quality assurance and insurance utilization review. Some, such as a clinical authorizations role, still asked for a BCBA.
  • University faculty: 5 (3%). Online adjunct, instructor and program director roles in ABA graduate programs.
  • Counseling, not ABA: 4 (2%). Mental health therapist jobs that matched the search terms. They are not ABA jobs, but we kept them to show what the remote filter returns.
  • RBT or technician: 2 (1%). One counseling marketplace listing "ABA therapist" work paid per session, and one RBT ad.
  • BCaBA: 2 (1%), plus 3 employers that fit no group.

Five of every six employers with remote ABA jobs were hiring a BCBA for a caseload.

If you hold a BCBA, remote ABA jobs are a real, if small, market. If you do not, the remote market is mostly operations and teaching jobs, and many of those still want a BCBA. For a deeper look at the non-clinical side, see our guide to BCBA insurance and utilization review jobs.

Most "remote" ABA jobs are remote inside one state

Here is what stood out most: 142 of the 185 employers offering remote ABA jobs (77%) tied their remote job to a place. The ad listed a city or state, required a state license, or said you must live in a certain area. Only 69 employers (37%) listed the location as simply "Remote." And 78 employers (42%) used words like hybrid, in-person, travel or field in the title or summary.

The reason is licensure. The BACB's map of US licensure laws shows about 40 states plus Washington, DC that license or otherwise regulate behavior analysts. In those states, the license usually follows the client, not the clinician. Kentucky's rule is explicit: a person providing ABA "via telehealth to a person physically located in Kentucky" must hold a Kentucky license (201 KAR 43:100). Texas has a similar rule for any client in Texas (16 TAC 121.79). So a remote BCBA in Ohio who takes Kentucky cases needs a Kentucky license. Our licensed behavior analyst state guide covers which states require one.

Key takeaway: Read "remote" as "remote for clients in our state" until the ad says otherwise. Ads that name a state license, such as "MD LBA" or "CT LBA required," are telling you exactly where your caseload will be.

Hybrid language matters too. Several ads promised remote work "with monthly travel," and others were built around in-home supervision with some telehealth days. That can still be a good job. It is not the same as never leaving your home office, so ask how many in-person visits the role needs each month before you interview.

Why RBTs almost never find remote ABA jobs

Direct 1:1 therapy is the RBT's job, and payers rarely pay for it over video. That one fact explains why remote ABA jobs for technicians barely exist. It is billed under CPT code 97153, and coverage by telehealth depends on the payer:

  • Maryland Medicaid stopped paying for telehealth delivery of 97153 on November 1, 2021. From April 1, 2026, at least 25% of BCBA supervision (97155) and caregiver training (97156, 97157) must also be delivered in person (Maryland Department of Health).
  • TRICARE West allows only caregiver guidance (97156) by telemedicine under the autism program, and only after the first six months are face-to-face (TriWest, the region's contractor, 2026).
  • Blue Cross Blue Shield of Michigan is an exception. Its 2023 guideline pays for 97153 by telemedicine on an ongoing basis, with a caregiver present.

Supervision works differently. The BACB RBT Handbook requires supervision for at least 5% of an RBT's monthly service hours, with at least two real-time, face-to-face contacts a month. In-person observation is "preferred," but the handbook allows web cameras or video conferencing. That is why the remote half of most ABA teams is the BCBA, not the technician.

One more caution. The single RBT ad tagged remote in our sample offered $54 to $62 an hour. The median posted pay for technician and therapist ads in our national comparison sample was $23.12 an hour (62 employers). An RBT offer at more than double the market rate for work-from-home direct therapy deserves real scrutiny. Confirm the employer, the payer and the clinical setup before you share personal details. If you are an RBT, our behavior technician jobs report shows where the in-person demand is, and the RBT to BCBA timeline is the realistic path to remote work.

How much do remote ABA jobs pay?

About the same as BCBA work overall for salaried roles, and somewhat less for hourly ones. We took the midpoint of each posted pay range, one ad per employer, and compared remote BCBA ads with BCBA ads from the same day's nationwide search.

BCBA ads, posted pay Remote All locations
Salaried, median$92,500 (49 employers)$89,307 (66 employers)
Salaried, middle half$84,500 to $100,000$82,125 to $98,875
Hourly, median$75 (91 employers)$85 (44 employers)
Hourly, middle half$65 to $87.50$65 to $91.88

Two patterns stand out. First, remote BCBA jobs lean hourly: 91 of the remote employers posted an hourly rate and 49 a salary, the reverse of the nationwide sample. Second, about half the remote employers (95 of 185) tagged their role part-time, often alongside a full-time option. Hourly, part-time and contract work is where most remote ABA jobs live. That suits a BCBA who wants a second caseload or flexible hours. It is less ideal if you need benefits, so check what an hourly role pays for non-billable work such as report writing and supervision prep. Our guides to part-time BCBA jobs and contractor vs employee status cover the trade-offs.

Clinical leadership paid more. Most salaried remote leadership ads fell between $90,000 and $140,000. Only seven employers posted a salary, and three of them were related House of Hearts entities, so treat that as a rough range, not a benchmark.

One employer posted a third of the remote ads we read

Job board counts overstate remote demand for a simple reason: a few employers post the same remote role many times. One employer, BK Behavior, accounted for 142 of the 424 remote ABA ads we read (33%), mostly listed in Georgia, California and New York at $55 to $93 an hour. The 10 most active posters together accounted for 48% of the ads. Nothing is wrong with posting widely. It does mean the 424 ads we read came from only 185 employers, with job locations in 32 states plus Washington, DC. A headline count of 1,098 remote BCBA postings overstates the number of distinct openings.

That has a practical upside. Once you filter out the repeats, the market for remote ABA jobs is small enough to cover in an afternoon. Search once a week, sort by date, and keep a simple list of employers you have already seen.

How to find remote ABA jobs that are real

  1. Start with your license. Search the states where you already hold a license, or where none is needed, before searching nationwide. A remote role in a state you cannot practice in is not open to you.
  2. Read the location line, not the headline. If the ad says "Remote" but lists a city, assume clients are near that city and in-person visits are possible.
  3. Ask four questions in the first call. How many in-person visits a month? Which payers fund the caseload, and do they cover telehealth supervision? What is the billable-hour target? Is the role W-2 or 1099?
  4. Check the payer mix. A remote caseload depends on payers that pay for 97155 and 97156 by telehealth. If the main payer limits telehealth, as Maryland Medicaid and TRICARE do, the role may shift on-site later.
  5. Treat outlier pay with caution. Remote RBT direct-therapy jobs at double the market rate, or vague per-session pay with no named clinic, need verification before you share documents.
  6. Let employers find you. The remote market is thin, so a visible profile that states your licenses and your remote preference can surface roles that never reach the big boards.

Frequently asked questions

Are there remote ABA jobs?

Yes, but few. On October 28, 2026, 4.1% of BCBA postings and 0.1% of RBT postings on SimplyHired were tagged remote. Of 185 employers with remote ABA jobs, 83% were hiring BCBAs for caseload roles.

Can RBTs work remotely?

Rarely. RBTs deliver direct therapy (CPT 97153), and many payers do not pay for it by telehealth. Maryland Medicaid stopped paying for it in 2021, and TRICARE excludes it. Only 39 of 31,651 RBT postings were tagged remote.

Do remote BCBAs need a license in each state?

Usually yes, in states that license behavior analysts. Kentucky and Texas both require their own license when the client is in the state during a telehealth session. Partly as a result, 77% of remote ABA employers tied the job to a place: a city, a state or a state license.

How much do remote BCBA jobs pay?

Salaried remote BCBA ads had a median of $92,500 (49 employers). Hourly remote ads had a median of $75 an hour (91 employers), compared with $85 for hourly BCBA ads nationwide.

What remote ABA jobs are there for non-BCBAs?

Remote ABA jobs for people without a BCBA are mostly operations and teaching roles: authorizations, intake, recruiting, quality assurance, utilization review and online university teaching. They made up about 6% of employers with remote ABA jobs, and some still asked for a BCBA.

How we did this

On October 28, 2026, we searched SimplyHired with the location set to "Remote" for BCBA, ABA, RBT and "applied behavior analysis," and recorded result counts for the same terms nationwide. SimplyHired shows about 25 pages per search, so we read 1,328 results, or 464 unique ads. We removed 40 that were clearly not ABA jobs and kept 424 ads from 185 employers; a few counseling ads from the same searches stayed in so the role breakdown shows what the filter returns. Related companies listed under different names count separately. Because results stop at about 25 pages, the employer shares reflect the ads SimplyHired ranked first. Pay figures use the midpoint of each posted range, one ad per employer. The comparison sample is 399 ABA ads from 207 employers in the nationwide BCBA and RBT searches. Job boards undercount jobs filled through referrals and overcount repeat postings, so treat the shares as a snapshot, not a census.
