How do you become an ABA therapist? For most jobs with that title, you need a high school diploma, a clean background check and an employer willing to train you. You do not need a master's degree. On November 2, 2026, we read one full job ad from each of the 164 employers hiring for frontline ABA therapist roles on SimplyHired. Only 11 of them (7%) required a bachelor's degree, and only 13 (8%) required an active RBT certification to apply.
What an ABA therapist actually is
"ABA therapist" is a job title, not a credential. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) certifies RBTs, BCaBAs and BCBAs. It does not certify ABA therapists. That gap causes a lot of confusion, because some school career pages describe an ABA therapist as a behavior analyst with a graduate degree.
In the job market, the title usually means a behavior technician. You work one-on-one with a client, usually a child with autism, and you carry out a plan written by a BCBA. The typical ABA therapist job description includes running teaching programs, recording data on each session, using the plan's behavior strategies and reporting progress to your supervisor. You do not assess clients or write the treatment plan.
There is one notable exception. Of the 178 employers in our search, 13 used the title for credentialed or graduate-level jobs, such as a BCBA or a Pennsylvania behavior specialist. Nine of them were in New York, mostly early intervention agencies that use it for certified special education teachers and licensed social workers. The eight of these employers that posted hourly pay listed a median of $65 an hour. The rest of this guide covers the frontline role.
ABA therapist requirements: what 164 employers asked for
We searched SimplyHired state by state for "ABA therapist," kept ads with that title and read one full ad per employer. We coded each ad by hand. A few larger employers run many ads, so counting employers keeps them from dominating the results.
| What the ad said | Employers | Share |
|---|---|---|
| High school diploma as the stated floor | 74 | 45% |
| No education floor stated | 69 | 42% |
| Some college, an associate degree or current enrollment | 10 | 6% |
| Bachelor's degree required | 11 | 7% |
| Experience required, usually with children or in ABA | 37 | 23% |
| Provides or pays for the RBT course or fees | 38 | 23% |
Treat these as minimums. Many ads leave things out, and a recruiter may ask for more than the ad does. The 23% only counts ads that tie the help to the RBT course or fees; a general "paid training" line did not count.
Do you need to be an RBT first?
Usually not to get hired, but you may need to earn it soon after. Only 8% of employers required an active RBT to apply. Another 26 (16%) made it a condition after hire, usually within 60 to 90 days. A further 64 (39%) preferred it or offered help getting it, and 61 (37%) did not mention it.
The BACB's handbook points the same way. It notes that applying most often happens after an organization has already hired the applicant. Your funding source can also force the timeline. Missouri Medicaid, for example, gives a new technician 90 calendar days from passing the initial competency assessment to become fully credentialed. After that, the technician must stop serving Medicaid clients.
How to become an ABA therapist in 7 steps
This route follows the BACB's RBT Handbook, updated in October 2026. Some of the rules changed on January 1, 2026, so older guides may be wrong.
- Check the basics. You must be at least 18 with a high school education or equivalent. You must also pass a criminal background check and an abuse registry check within 180 days of paying for your application.
- Apply for jobs before you pay for training. Many employers provide the 40-hour course. You will also need a certified person to sign your forms, assess your skills and later supervise you, and a job is the simplest way to find one. That person cannot be related to you, subordinate to you or employed by you.
- Complete the 40-hour training. It must take at least 5 days and no more than 180 days, and it must meet the BACB's 2026 requirements. Before you enroll, confirm that the certificate will carry the 2026 approval statement. The BACB does not provide or recommend courses.
- Pass the Initial Competency Assessment. You show a qualified assessor that you can perform the required tasks. Do this after the training and no more than 90 days before you submit your application.
- Apply to the BACB. The application fee is $65. An application stays active for 90 days.
- Pass the RBT exam. The exam appointment costs $45 through Pearson VUE. You get 90 minutes for 85 multiple-choice questions, and 75 of them are scored. You may take it up to 8 times within 12 months of approval.
- Get added by your supervisor. Your certification stays inactive until a qualified supervisor adds you in the BACB portal. To keep it, you need supervision on at least 5% of your service hours each month. Recertification moves to a two-year cycle starting in 2027, with 12 hours of professional development per cycle, so check the expiration date in your BACB portal.
Our RBT certification guide covers the credential in more depth.
How long does it take to become an ABA therapist?
You can start the job as soon as an employer finishes onboarding you, and some ads promise an immediate start. Certification takes longer. The BACB's minimum is 5 days of training, followed by the assessment, application review and exam scheduling. In the ads that set a deadline, the usual window was 60 to 90 days after hire. The shortest was 30 days and the longest was 6 months.
Choosing a 40-hour course: the pass rates vary widely
Each year the BACB publishes first-time RBT exam results by training provider. For 2025, 51 public providers each had at least 10 first-time candidates. Together they had 71,555 candidates, and 75.6% passed. Provider rates ran from 8.1% to 100%.
| Provider | First-time candidates, 2025 | First-time pass rate |
|---|---|---|
| Relias | 19,418 | 80.4% |
| CentralReach | 13,705 | 79.6% |
| Autism Partnership Foundation | 13,456 | 61.2% |
| Rethink | 10,690 | 81.1% |
| Behavior Development Solutions | 923 | 93.5% |
These numbers do not prove that one course teaches better than another. Providers enroll different people, and employers may add their own support. The BACB also notes that provider names come from what applicants entered. Use the report as a question to ask, not a ranking. If your employer offers a course, ask what its new hires' pass rate looks like and what exam prep comes with it.
What ABA therapist jobs pay
Among the 145 frontline employers that posted a usable hourly range (we left out one unverified $95 listing), the median midpoint was $23.50 an hour, and the middle half ran from $21.50 to $26.00. The median low end of those ranges was $21.00. Your starting rate will depend on the employer and your RBT status.
Employers that required an active RBT listed a median of $24.50 (12 employers). Employers that let you earn it after hire listed about $22 (26 employers). Those groups are small and differ in location and setting, so read that as a pattern, not a guaranteed raise. Some ads do state the raise directly. One Massachusetts employer starts at $22.50 without an RBT and $24.50 with one. For more detail, see our ABA therapist salary guide.
Check the hours as well as the rate. Of the 473 ads in our search, 359 (76%) were tagged as part-time, sometimes alongside full-time. Therapy often happens after school, so a good hourly rate may come with a short week. Also, 214 ads (45%) listed reliable transportation, because many jobs involve home visits.
State rules can add a step
The BACB sets the national credential, but states and insurers can add their own rules. Ask each employer what applies to you.
- Oregon registers behavior analysis interventionists. The state requires 40 hours of training and a fingerprint-based background check.
- Louisiana requires a licensed behavior analyst to register each line technician with the state board.
- Nevada registers RBTs at the state level under NRS and NAC Chapter 641D.
- Massachusetts ads often ask for more. One employer asked for 60 college credits, 6 months of relevant experience or an active RBT. It also set a minimum age of 21, which it attributed to state insurance rules.
Where the job can lead
The frontline role is also a common way into the field. As of November 2, 2026, the BACB's registry showed 275,236 RBTs and 82,309 BCBAs and BCBA-Ds in the United States, or about 3.3 RBTs for each behavior analyst. A BACB report based on Lightcast data counted 132,307 US job postings in 2025 that required or preferred BCBA or BCBA-D certification, about 1.6 for each current certificant.
That demand makes the next step worth a look. Across 595 employers with posted salaries in our October BCBA salary analysis, the median BCBA salary was $89,934. Getting there takes a graduate degree and supervised fieldwork, as our guide on how to become a BCBA explains. Some employers help with the cost. The New England Center for Children advertises a reduced-tuition master's program, and Stride Autism Centers advertises up to $10,000 in tuition. Before you count on therapy hours toward fieldwork, read about restricted and unrestricted hours, because direct therapy can only fill part of the requirement.
ABA therapist: frequently asked questions
Do you need a degree to be an ABA therapist?
Usually not. Only 7% of the 164 frontline employers we read required a bachelor's degree, and another 6% asked for some college, an associate degree or current enrollment. A degree can still help you get a job or a higher rate, and many ads list one as preferred.
Can you become an ABA therapist with no experience?
Yes, at many employers. Twelve employers said outright that no experience was needed, and most others did not require it. About 23% did require experience, usually with children or in ABA. Childcare, school aide and camp work can help you qualify.
How much does it cost to become an ABA therapist?
The BACB charges $65 to apply and Pearson VUE charges $45 per exam appointment, so the minimum is $110 plus any course fee. Free courses exist, including one from the Autism Partnership Foundation, and 23% of the employers we read said they provide or pay for the course or fees. Ask about this before you pay anything yourself.
Is an ABA therapist the same as an RBT?
Not exactly. An RBT is a BACB certification, while ABA therapist is a job title. Many ABA therapists are RBTs, and others are technicians working toward it. Our behavior technician jobs guide covers the same role under its other common title.
Is it hard to become an ABA therapist?
Getting hired is often the easy part, since most ads set a low entry bar. The exam takes some preparation: about one in four first-time candidates at public training providers did not pass in 2025. The job itself can be physically and emotionally demanding, so ask about caseload, supervision and guaranteed hours in your interview.
How we built this data
On November 2, 2026, we searched SimplyHired for "ABA therapist" in each state and Washington, DC, reading up to five result pages per location. We found 473 ads with the title from 178 employers after merging name variants. We removed 13 employers with credentialed or graduate-level jobs and one with an operations job, leaving 164 found in searches of 36 states and DC. We read one randomly chosen ad per employer, so a multi-state employer's rules may vary by location. This is a snapshot of one job board, not a census, and an ad that says nothing about a requirement does not prove the employer waives it.
