A PhD in ABA is a research doctorate in applied behavior analysis. It takes about three to seven years, depending on whether you start with a bachelor's or a master's. Only 11 universities hold ABAI accreditation for a doctoral program in behavior analysis, and every one of those accredited doctorates is taught on campus. The best of them pay you a stipend; of the online options, Capella and Endicott publish totals of about $50,100 and $62,700. This guide compares the programs, the costs and the jobs, using live BACB data that shows BCBA-Ds are now a much smaller share of US BCBAs than they were a decade ago.
What a PhD in ABA is, and what it is not
A PhD in applied behavior analysis trains you to design and publish research, teach at a university, and lead clinical or organizational programs. You conduct original research and write a dissertation.
A PhD is a degree. The BCBA is a certification. The two are separate, and a doctorate does not replace the BCBA. The Behavior Analyst Certification Board (BACB) adds a "D" to a BCBA who completes a qualifying doctorate, but its handbook says the BCBA-D "does not grant any privileges beyond the BCBA certification." Our BCBA-D guide covers the three routes to the designation.
Check one detail before you apply: some doctoral programs do not lead to the BCBA at all. Capella University and Bay Path University require a current BCBA to enter. Simmons University states that its online PhD does not make you eligible for the BCBA exam. If you are not yet a BCBA, pick a program that includes BCBA coursework and fieldwork, or finish a master's first. Our guide on how to become a BCBA explains that path.
The 11 ABAI-accredited PhD in ABA programs
The Association for Behavior Analysis International (ABAI) accredits behavior analysis degrees. In October 2026, 11 universities hold an accredited doctoral program, against 39 with an accredited master's program. ABAI notes that accreditation "does not extend to all campuses or formats where that degree is offered." For all 11, the accredited doctorate is the on-campus program.

The University of South Florida also runs a well-known PhD in ABA. It is not on the ABAI accredited list, but it is funded: USF describes "a generous doctoral compensation package with tuition coverage, salary, and health care coverage."
Online PhD in ABA programs
Searches for a PhD in ABA online are common, and several schools offer one. None of the online doctorates below is ABAI-accredited, and most are built for working BCBAs who already hold a master's. They suit a clinician who wants a doctorate without leaving a job. If you want a research faculty career, compare them carefully with the accredited on-campus programs, since faculty roles are where the job ads we reviewed ask for a doctorate.

How long does a PhD in ABA take?
Length depends mostly on where you start. Programs that admit students with a bachelor's degree build a master's into the doctorate, so they run longer.
- ✓From a bachelor's: about five to seven years. The University of Nevada, Reno says its doctorate is "ordinarily achieved in six years" after a bachelor's degree. The University of Kansas reports a median of five years to graduation across all its doctoral students, and UNR reports a median of six and a mean of seven.
- ✓From a master's: about three to four years. Ohio State says full-time students finish in three and a half to four years. The Munroe-Meyer Institute program is three years.
- ✓Online: three years at the fastest. Endicott says "as little as three years," and Capella's own cost examples run 18 to 22 quarters, or four and a half to five and a half years.
Simmons, which is self-paced, gives a range of four to seven years. Plan for the dissertation to take longer if you keep a full-time job.
What a PhD in ABA costs: funded versus self-paid
The two kinds of doctorate have opposite economics. A funded, on-campus PhD pays you. The Munroe-Meyer Institute pays a $28,788 stipend aligned with the NIH predoctoral level, plus full tuition remission and health insurance. The University of Florida gives every first-year psychology doctoral student a stipend and a full tuition waiver, renewable for up to five years. UNC Wilmington offers four years of 20-hour-a-week teaching assistantships.
The cost of a funded PhD is the pay you give up. A stipend near $29,000 sits about $61,000 below the $89,934 median salary we found across 595 employers' BCBA job ads (see our BCBA salary report). For a working BCBA who leaves a job, that is about $183,000 in pay given up over a three-year program, and more than $240,000 over four years, before taxes.
A self-paid online PhD lets you keep your BCBA salary, but you pay tuition. Capella's published estimate is about $50,100 with its tuition cap, and Endicott lists $62,700. Those numbers exclude fees, books and travel. Ask your employer about tuition help before you enroll: in our October 2026 review of BCBA ads from 688 employers, 13.5% mentioned tuition, loan repayment or loan forgiveness help.
Admission requirements for ABA PhD programs
Requirements vary, but four patterns repeat across the programs above.
- A master's degree is common. Ohio State, Teachers College, the Munroe-Meyer Institute, USF, Endicott, Capella and The Chicago School require one. Caldwell, UF, UNR and UNC Wilmington admit students with a bachelor's.
- Grades matter. Caldwell sets a 3.6 minimum GPA, USF 3.5, and Capella 3.0. USF does not require the GRE.
- Research fit decides it. On-campus programs admit small cohorts to work in a specific faculty member's lab. UNC Wilmington admits two to three students a year. Read recent papers from the lab you want, and name that faculty member in your statement.
- Deadlines come early. Caldwell and Western Michigan close applications on December 1, and Florida Tech on January 15, for a fall start.
The job market for a PhD in ABA
The BACB's monthly certificant data shows how rare BCBA-Ds have become. In October 2013 there were 1,504 BCBA-Ds among 10,830 US BCBAs, or 13.9%. By October 2026 the number had doubled to 3,046, but the total number of BCBAs grew more than sevenfold, to 81,703. BCBA-Ds are now 3.7% of US BCBAs.
That gap matters most for the jobs where a doctorate is the entry ticket. In our September 2026 review of 1,500 BCBA-related job ads from LinkedIn and SimplyHired, 77 required a doctorate, and 57 of those were university faculty or academic roles. Eight were hospital or medical roles. Only two were clinical BCBA or clinical director jobs.
Policy points the same way. From January 1, 2032, the BACB will accept only Pathway 1, which "requires a degree from an accredited university training program." Every future BCBA will come through a university program, and university faculty jobs are where doctorate requirements cluster.
A doctorate is the entry ticket to faculty and research jobs. In the clinical ads we reviewed, it carried no visible pay premium.
Pay is where expectations need adjusting. The doctorate-required faculty ads with a posted salary had a median of $80,000, but only seven universities posted pay, so treat that figure as a rough guide. Clinical ads that accepted a "BCBA or BCBA-D" had a median of $95,875 across 26 employers, close to what ordinary BCBA ads pay. Within those ads, the title moved pay more than the credential: clinical director ads paid a median of $98,750 (12 employers) against $92,500 for staff BCBA roles (15 employers). The few leadership roles that listed a doctorate as preferred paid more, but there were only five employers in that group.
Is a PhD in ABA worth it?
It depends on the job you want in five years.
- ✓Worth it if you want to run a research lab, teach in a university program, direct a hospital or medical-center behavior program, or lead training for a large organization. Choose a funded, on-campus program with a strong research record.
- ✓Maybe worth it if you want clinical leadership and the credibility of a doctorate, and an employer will help pay. A part-time online program keeps your income, but check that it fits your goal before you commit $50,000 or more.
- ✓Probably not worth it for pay alone in a clinical BCBA role. The clinical ads we reviewed showed no visible doctorate premium, and a move into a clinical director role raised posted pay more than the credential did. Our list of the BCBA jobs employers post now shows where the demand is.
Frequently asked questions
Can you get a PhD in ABA online?
Yes. Capella University, Endicott College, The Chicago School, Bay Path University and Simmons University offer online or hybrid doctorates in behavior analysis. None is ABAI-accredited, most require a master's, and Capella and Bay Path require a current BCBA to enter.
How long is a PhD in ABA?
About five to seven years after a bachelor's degree, or three to four years after a master's. The University of Nevada, Reno says its doctorate is ordinarily achieved in six years after a bachelor's, and Ohio State says full-time students finish in three and a half to four years.
Do you need a BCBA to get a PhD in ABA?
Not always. Caldwell, UF, UNR and UNC Wilmington admit students with a bachelor's and include BCBA coursework. Capella and Bay Path require a current BCBA, and the Munroe-Meyer Institute requires applicants who qualify for BCBA credentialing.
Does a PhD in ABA make you a BCBA-D?
Not automatically. You must already be a BCBA, then apply to the BACB for the designation. A doctorate from an ABAI-accredited doctoral program qualifies directly; other doctorates need a behavior-analytic dissertation plus coursework, mentorship or publications, or postdoctoral retraining.
Are there fully funded PhD programs in ABA?
Yes. The Munroe-Meyer Institute pays a $28,788 stipend with full tuition remission, the University of Florida funds every first-year psychology doctoral student with a stipend and tuition waiver, and USF offers an assistantship package with tuition coverage, salary and health care. Confirm with each program how much tuition the waiver covers.
The bottom line on a PhD in ABA
A PhD in ABA opens faculty and research jobs, and BCBA-Ds are now only 3.7% of US BCBAs, down from 13.9% in 2013. If that is your goal, apply to a funded, ABAI-accredited program and choose your lab carefully. If your goal is a higher clinical salary, a doctorate is a slow and expensive way to get it.
How we gathered this data
Program details come from each university's official pages and the ABAI Accreditation Board list, checked October 14, 2026; tuition and funding change each year, so confirm with the program. BCBA-D counts come from the BACB's public certificant data, pulled October 14, 2026 (October 2026 is a partial month). Job-ad figures come from two CertifyndABA reviews: 1,500 BCBA-related ads collected from LinkedIn and SimplyHired in September 2026, sorted by rule for doctoral requirements and posted pay, with manual review of every ad that required or preferred a doctorate (the 77 doctorate-required ads came from 45 employers), and one BCBA ad per employer for 688 US employers collected in October 2026. Posted pay is the midpoint of each employer's range, and small samples are labeled.
