About Alternative Paths Training School
Alternative Paths Training School (APTS) is a year-round special education day school founded in 2002 in Dumfries, VA by Alan El Tagi (M.Ed., BCBA) and Susan Gross. APTS provides highly structured classroom settings for students ages 5-22 with autism spectrum disorder, developmental disabilities, emotional disabilities, and learning disabilities. The school specializes in intensive behavioral services for students who engage in self-injurious behaviors (SIBs) and aggressive behaviors. APTS was founded with behavior analytic principles as its bedrock, and its programs incorporate Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) methodology, including Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs), behavioral data collection, and supervision by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs). The school operates three campuses (Alexandria, Manassas, and Stafford) plus a central administration building in Dumfries, VA, and has expanded internationally. APTS is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization licensed by the Virginia Department of Education (VDOE) and accredited through the Virginia Association of Independent Specialized Facilities (VAISEF). Note: APTS is primarily a special education day school rather than a standalone ABA therapy clinic, though ABA principles are central to its behavioral services model.
